Debussy, Handel, Liddell, McDowell, Verdi Song Recital Charlton House, 7 June 2013 A delightful hour, arranged at short notice, so there was no time to provide words and translations of the French songs, but their moods came across well. Marianne Wright has a delightful manner and rapport with her audience. The enjoyable contemporary English language songs in "non-challenging" musical idioms were, deliberately I guess, chosen for music club audiences? The Verdi is the lovely "fairy song" from the last Act of Falstaff; I'd never heard it with piano. The arrangement goes well and Gabriel Jones was a reliable partner who contributed to the success of this hour. Peter Grahame Woolf |
